ARCHIVES AT
ALLOURA WATERS
The first residents to
move into Alloura Waters did so in May 1991 and the village was finally
complete, with
198
units or villas, plus a Community Centre, in 2003. Since 1991 a lot of material
has been collected about the village and placed in the village archives. These
archives include many photographs of the village under construction, a history
of the village, full page advertisements and stories about the village in the
early days, a copy of every edition of our newspaper, AWARE, a copy of the
minutes of every residents’ Forum Meeting, plus much more.
These archives are kept up-to-date with the addition of interesting material as
it comes to hand. The history of the village is added to each year and any
material found in newspapers about Alloura Waters residents is placed in a
special folder in the archives. All this material is kept in a filing cabinet
but is available for all residents to view and, on special occasions, has been
put on display.
PAST AND PRESENT PRESIDENTS
Gus Cullen May
1992 to April 1993.
The first
residents meeting was held on 27th March 1992 and was chaired by John Mortenson
the General manager of Alloura Waters Pty Ltd. At the following meeting on 24th
April1992 Gus Cullen was elected as Chairman. At the meeting on 29th May 1992
his appointment was confirmed for six months. However this seems to have
stretched to twelve months as he was still chairman when it came time to hold
the AGM in April 1993. Gus' tenure saw not just much construction within the
village, but the formation of sub-committees - disputes, garden, management
liaison and social.
Dorothy Purdue
April 1993 to March 1995.
Dorothy was
elected Chairman on 30th April 1993 and served until March 1995. Dorothy's
tenure saw much development in the village, including the official opening in
May 1993 by The Hon Chris Hartcher MP of stage 3 and the construction of stages
4, 5, and 6.
Max Fox March
1995 to March 1998.
Max came to the
village with his partner Jean, in November 1993 and was elected president on
31st March. He served in this capacity until the 27th March 1998. Max's tenure
covered the worrying period when the company owning the village got into
financial difficulties and went into liquidation. During this time the village
was bought by Central Coast Retirement Ltd (now called Living Choice
Australia) and Max was instrumental in making sure that the hand over went as
smoothly as possible. Max managed to get the message across to the new owners
that the residents liked to run their own affairs without interference from
management.
Wes Fletcher
March 1998 to March 2001.
Wes came to the
village in May 1996 with his wife Hazel. During Wes' tenure he oversaw changes
required because of the proclamation by the NSW Government of the Retirement
Villages Act 1999. These changes included a new set of village rules and a
constitution to conform to the Act. The new community centre opened on 11th
November 2000 and many new residents came to the village, all of whom received a
welcoming visit from the president. During 2000, construction was commenced on
the waterfront Apartments and the first Waterfront resident moved into Apartment
207 in February 2001. Before the opening of the new Community Centre, residents
meetings were held firstly, in the old centre (now villa 160), which rapidly
became too small, then at the Davistown RSL and, lastly (for three months) in
Davistown Progress Hall. Wes also introduced the concept of two secretaries, one
for Forum and one for Residents Committee meeting, thus lightning the load.
Joan Edwards
March 2001 to March 2004.
Joan came to the
village with her husband Alan, in January 1999 and was elected President o the
30th March 2001 ( having previously served as Vice President in 2000 ) and
served until 26th march 2004. Joan's tenure saw the completion of construction
of the main village and the Waterfront Apartments. She had the honour of opening
these apartments in November 2002 and was kept very busy visiting new arrivals
as the village gradually filled. During Joan's presidency, Ron Dobler sold his
majority shareholding in Living Choice Australia Ltd. to Ian Tregoning,
Mark Dixon and Graham Hobbs, Joan welcomed the new owners to the village in
January 2004.
John Samios
March 2004 To March 2006.
John came to
Alloura Waters with his wife Traute, in January 2000 and was elected Village
President of 26th March 2004. His term covered the time when the owners of the
village, Living Choice Australia, passed management of all its villages to a
specialist Adelaide based village management firm, Village Care. John spent many
hours in consultation with various sub-committees, Living Choice and Village
Care trying to iron out the many problems which arose upon the hand-over of
responsibility.
Colin
Beveridge March 2006 To March 2008
Colin
Beveridge came to the village in 1999 with his wife, Miriam, having finished his
working life holding the position of Director and General Manager of Patricks
(Shipping & Stevedoring). For six years Colin was Convenor of the Management
Liaison Sub-Committee and was elected to the position of Village President on 31
March 2006. He served in this position until 28 March 2008. Colin had a
self confessed passion for this village and he spent great time and effort in
convincing the operators that being managed by an absent agent was not in the
best interests of residents. This was recognised by the village operators, who
resumed direct management of the village in 2007. Colin developed a good rapport
with the operators, which holds us in good stead for the future.
Joan Edwards March 2008 to
March 2010
Joan came to the village in
January 1999 with her husband Alan, and served a term as President from March
2001 to March 2004. She had previously served as Vice President in 2000. Joan
has continued the good rapport with the operators.
Colin Beveridge March 2010
See above.
Thank you Lyn Kennedy.
