GARDEN SUB-COMMITTEE

FUNCTIONS OF THE GARDEN SUB-COMMITTEE

The Garden Sub-Committee, with the assistance of the Village Manager, administers the garden budget supplied from levies and oversees the lawn mowing and garden maintenance carried out by three gardeners employed by the village.  The sub-committee, consisting of eight residents, meets each month and considers such things as purchase of soil, mulch and plants and any other matters pertaining to the lawns and gardens.  Residents fill out a form if they want any gardening done in their own gardens.  The Village Manager collates these forms and hands them to the gardeners to carry out the work.  The village has been split into sections and the gardeners work in one section at a time.  The sub-committee decides what will be grown in common gardens and instructs the gardeners accordingly.

Every few months the Garden Sub-Committee organises a village working bee in which quite a few residents participate and which helps to keep down the very considerable cost of maintaining the gardens.  The working bee usually lasts about 2½ hours, during which residents can do as much or as little as they are able.  Morning tea is supplied by two residents and, after the working bee, the sub-committee supplies a sausage sizzle for workers.  This is a good social occasion.
