HOME                                                               THE WEATHERMAN

One of the most, if not the subject most frequently discussed in everyday conversation is the weather. Amongst sailors and flyers it is of prime importance. To those engaged in operational flying, air sea search and rescue missions, much depends on the accuracy and reliability of the meteorological forecast for the search area. The study and appreciation of the phenomena of the atmosphere provides a hobby and an exercise in a subject that is never ending in its complexity.

The small "Davis" weather station located in our villa provides accuracy hourly readings of inside and outside temperatures, wind direction and velocity, temperature readings of wind chill. These details are stored and downloaded to a computer programme for statistical and graphical analysis. Daily readings of precipitation maximum, minimum and current humidity percentages are taken 0900 hours each day and manually added to the computer data bank.

It is from this source that the monthly contribution to "Aware" is prepared for publication.

When the matter of forecasting is considered, the appreciation of this science is recognised. A word frequently and closely associated with describing a weather pattern is "vagaries" in advancing the probable allusive behaviour of our atmosphere that holds such interest. The weatherman is rarely seen to be the bearer of glad tidings particularly when broaching the expectations for rain during periods of drought.
